Dear Parents and Carers,

Read with Someone You Love

It has been wonderful to see so many of you at our Read with Someone You Love events this week. Sharing stories and reading together is such a special way to support your child’s learning and foster a love for reading. Please continue to make this a regular part of your routines at home—it makes such a difference!

Christmas

A quick reminder that we will break up for the Christmas holidays at 1:30pm on Friday 20th December. Please note this early finish.

Looking ahead to January, there is a slight change to the calendar: we will now return to school on Monday 6th January. Please update your diaries accordingly.

We are all eagerly anticipating the festive season and the many Christmas events planned across the school. Do check the calendar below or visit our website for the details specific to your child’s year group.

Parent Survey Feedback

Thank you to all the parents who took the time to complete the recent parent survey. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many of you highlighting the best aspects of our school, including:

  • Caring and nurturing staff
  • Supportive and approachable teachers
  • A welcoming, family-like atmosphere
  • The school’s diversity and the opportunities for children to learn from one another

We truly appreciate your kind words and are proud to hear how much you value these qualities.

In terms of areas for development, a few parents raised concerns about the Year 1 path. We have explored the possibility of widening the path, but unfortunately, due to the slope and drainage challenges (as many Heron parents will understand), this isn’t feasible. To help ease congestion, we kindly ask parents collecting from Year 1 classrooms to queue on one side of the steps, allowing other parents to pass safely.

Concerns were also raised about littering along the Cinder Track. As this is the council's responsibility, we encourage parents to report any issues directly to them. We regularly report concerns to the council, but additional reports from parents will help emphasise the need for action. Together, we can make a difference in keeping this area clean.

SAFEGUARDING

Domestic Abuse is defined as an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, including sexual violence, in the majority of cases by a partner or ex-partner, but also by a family member or carer.  It is very common. In the vast majority of cases, it is experienced by women and is perpetrated by men.

Domestic abuse can include, but is not limited to, the following:

Coercive control (a pattern of intimidation, degradation, isolation and control with the use or threat of physical or sexual violence)

Psychological and/or emotional abuse.

Physical or sexual abuse.

Financial or economic abuse (including visa control).

Harassment and stalking.

Online or digital abuse.

Please do speak to a member of the safeguarding team or call one of the helplines above should you find yourself in a difficult situation and need help.

Celebrating our Children!

In Science Year 2 completed an investigation into the properties of materials and had to predict what each material would do.

In History, they looked at portraits of Queens and Kings and compared Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth II.

Year 1 had an amazing Indian Dance workshop this week! Feedback from the children was overwhelmingly positive: 

Zara-“My favourite part of the dance workshop is when we did the turn”.

Humzah- “I liked the dance workshop because the music was good”.

Salik- “I had fun because I liked the dance that the teacher made”.

Halimah- “I liked the dance workshop because we were moving our hips and I enjoyed it because we learned how to do a Bollywood dance”.

Kareeem-“I liked the dance workshop because it was so amazing and the music was really good”.

Cut your Carbon Challenge

Please return your cut your carbon sheets to your child's class teacher to be passed onto Eco Council, who will be adding up our school's total carbon cut and will let you know our total later this term!

Wrestling Club

What an amazing club! This club is hosted by a previous medalist and certainly engages the children. 

There were lots of safe and rehearsed skills being developed although I (Mr Bowskill) was told I wasn't allowed to join in because I didn't know the rules!


ATTENDANCE

Well done to all parents/carers who continue to ensure their children attend school regularly.

This week Year 2 has the highest attendance of any year group across the school. Well done!!

What is Persistent Absence?

Persistent absence is defined by the Department for Education (DfE) as when a child's attendance falls below 90% of their possible school sessions. This includes both authorised and unauthorised absences. Missing 10% or more of school can significantly impact a child’s education and development, so schools and local authorities work to identify and support pupils at risk of persistent absence.

Here at Phoenix Infants we monitor your child's attendance and this includes whether your child is at risk of being Persistently Absent or has already reached the threshold of 19 days and is therefore classed as Persistently Absent for the rest of the academic year. 

Our approach will always be to try and support our families so that this threshold is not reached. To help you understand the 'threshold', the tables below indicate the risk of being classed as Persistently Absent by the number of school days your child has missed and the number of times they have been absent.

What happens if my child is a moderate risk of Persistent Absence?

It is likely the school has already communicated with you via a Stage 1 and Stage 2 letter. There is also a strong chance that Mr Bowskill has communicated with you already about your child's absences. The best approach to reduce the risk of becoming a High risk is to keep your child in school, every day. We would also recommend keeping in regular contact with Mr Bowskill about your child's attendance. 

What happens if my child is a high risk of Persistent Absence?

We will have communicated with you and depending on the reasons for your child's absence, you may have already been issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice from Slough Borough Council. If your child is in the High risk category, Mr Bowskill will be monitoring your child's attendance daily and we would urge you to speak directly with Mr Bowskill about ANY attendance issues. 

Being in the high risk category means that you are very close to being formally classed as PA; this means that the school or Slough Borough Council can issue a Warning Period for improvement,  issue a Fixed Penalty Notice if there have been 5 days of absence within the last 10 weeks. This also includes considering the issuing of a 2nd fine where appropriate. 

What should I do next? 

In all circumstances, the best thing to do is to speak to Mr Bowskill who will happily discuss your child's attendance, advise you on any actions that can be taken to support your child and family and explain where the risks are for your child's attendance.
