Messages from the Principal, Miss Jarrett

{item_alt_tag}

Dear Parents,

As we embark upon the summer term, I am delighted to share with you the remarkable achievements and experiences that have already enriched our school community.

The mini marathon on Friday exemplified the spirit of Phoenix Infant Academy, with our children demonstrating exceptional speed, determination and resilience. Their unwavering commitment to our school rule of "try your best" was evident as they navigated the 200-metre track, whether completing a single lap or surpassing the 2-kilometre mark. The anticipation builds as we eagerly await the announcement of the victorious Hero house on Friday, recognising the house team who collectively ran the greatest distance.

Our commitment to providing invaluable life experiences continues to flourish, as evidenced by our recent excursion to London. Another group of 20 Year 2 children had the privilege of witnessing the Sadlers Wells ballet company's mesmerising performance of Swan Lake. This brings the total number of Year 2 children who have ventured into the capital to an impressive 80. As we approach the conclusion of this academic year's London visits, our focus shifts to the future, with plans already underway to extend this enriching opportunity to our current Year 1 children when they progress to Year 2. Watch this space for more details!

As we enter the final stretch of the academic year, I cannot overemphasise the critical importance of consistent attendance. Every day spent in school is an opportunity for your child to engage with key learning experiences, directly impacting their attainment. I urge you to review your child's attendance report (emailed at the end of the SPring term)  meticulously, particularly if their attendance falls below or risks falling below 90%. Your proactive efforts to ensure your child's daily presence at school are invaluable. To further incentivise attendance, I am pleased to announce the return of our annual chocolate challenge for the remainder of this term, details of which can be found below.

As always, many thanks for your continued support.

Miss Jarrett
Principal

SAFEGUARDING

NSPCC

At Phoenix Infant Academy, the safety and well-being of our children is our top priority, which is why one of our school rules - the most important school rule - is to "Stay Safe".  We understand that keeping children safe extends beyond the school gates and into the home. This is where the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) plays a vital role in supporting parents and providing essential resources to help children stay safe. We use a number of different NSPCC resources in school and this term our Year 2 children will be having NSPCC workshops with their volunteers.

How the NSPCC Helps Parents

The NSPCC offers a wealth of resources designed to empower parents and caregivers in safeguarding their children. Here are some key ways they assist:

  • Advice and Support: The NSPCC provides practical advice on various topics, including online safety, bullying, and emotional well-being. Their website is a treasure trove of information that parents can access at any time.

  • Workshops and Training: The NSPCC conducts workshops and training sessions for parents, helping them understand the signs of abuse and how to talk to their children about difficult topics.

  • Helpline: The NSPCC runs a confidential helpline where parents can seek advice or report concerns about a child's welfare. This service is available 24/7, ensuring that help is always at hand.

Important Messages for Children

The NSPCC emphasises the importance of teaching children how to stay safe. Here are some key messages they promote:

  • The “Underwear Rule”: This simple rule teaches children that their body belongs to them and that they should never keep secrets about touching. It encourages open communication between children and trusted adults.

  • Online Safety: With the rise of technology, the NSPCC provides guidance on how children can stay safe online. This includes not sharing personal information and knowing how to report inappropriate content.

  • Encouraging Open Dialogue: The NSPCC encourages parents to create an environment where children feel safe to talk about anything that worries them. Regular conversations about feelings and experiences can build trust and openness.

Please do take a look at the NSPCC website for more information and support.

Celebrating our Children!

This term in Science, Year 1 have been exploring the wonderful world of plants! Over the past two weeks, the children have planted and carefully observed their own cress seeds grow, watching how they sprouted and developed. They have learnt about all the different parts of a plant, discovered what each part does to help the plant grow and stay healthy and why plants are important discovering how both humans and animals rely on plants for survival.  Year 1 now understand just how important sunlight, water and soil are for healthy plant growth.  As part of their learning, they planted their own cress seeds and enjoyed watching them grow day by day.

Year 1's topic in R.E this half term is Naam Karan the Sikh naming ceremony. We have been learning about how Sikh people welcome new babies and discovering the meaning behind our names.

Kingfisher class parents have been messaging to tell us why the chose the name and its meaning:

"The name Sartaj means chief and leader, because of the meaning we thought it would suit Sartaj himself as a person".

"Rayaan's name is the name of the gates to heaven. We believe there are 8 and Rayaan is the name of those. We chose it to stay close to our faith and give him a name within our faith in Islam".

"Hammad's name is an Islamic name and means “praise” (the one who constantly praises Allah)".

"Ahmad translates to "highly praised" or "most commendable". Isa in Arabic, means "salvation of God" and is the Arabic form of the name Jesus".

Our House Captains led assembly last week to introduce our next Hero House competition, our first Phoenix Poetry Slam.  Children are invited to learn a poem by heart, they will then recite this to their class and children will vote for their favourite.  The winning poetry recitations from each of our 4 Hero houses in each class will go into the Hero House semi final and the winners will go into the final. Parents of the finalists will be invited into assembly to watch.  Children may learn any poem they choose.  We will be adding some poems to Dojo but you are welcome to choose your own.  Good luck!

The Nest

It's been a busy but exciting start of the term for pupils in the Nest. With the sunny weather, they've been enjoying lots of outdoor learning activities. Sensory story sessions have been a real highlight, bringing stories to life through touch , sound and movement- making learning fun and engaging for everyone!

Slough Dance Festival

We had a wonderful time at the Slough Dance Festival this week hosted at the Curve library! The children have been working hard to learn a dance in their weekly after school dance club in Spring Term. The children confidently performed on stage to many from the across the Slough community- even the mayor was there! It was a very hot day during the performance, and we were treated to ice lollies to help us cool down! What an amazing experience for the children to develop their confidence as much as their dance skills. Look out for next the dance club and remember to sign up!

Phoenix Attendance - Chocolate Challenge

After the success of the last 2 Chocolate Challenges, we will be running another Attendance Chocolate Challenge ... Tuesday 6th May to Friday 23rd May.

All children who have 100% attendance during this period will receive chocolate on the afternoon of Friday 23rd May. This is always a popular challenge with our children and Mr Bowskill worries that there may also be lots of teachers and staff chasing him for a chocolate for their attendance too!

3 weeks of the whole school attending each and every day will have an amazing impact on our attendance figures for the school year! Plus, we cannot forget how important your child's attendance is on their education.
